Title: Tribology and corrosion mechanism of the nitrided metal surfaces (pure iron, cast iron and stainless steel) by low temperature plasma nitriding treatment
Profile:
Professor Yanwen Zhou, PhD graduated from University of Salford (UK) in 2005, have been worked in University of Science and Technology Liaoning till now. She was nominated as the Dean of the university’ Academic Committee during 2020-2025. Her main research interests are surface coating and modification technology, utilizing plasma.
Abstract:
Plasma nitriding, especially assisted by hot tungsten wires as the electron source, is a highly effective nitriding technique, which is able to treat the metal’s surface during several hours to reach several hundreds µm harden surface of pure ion and cast irons, more than 10 µm harden surface of the stainless steel. Besides the improvement of the wear resistances, the corrosion resistances of the nitriding iron and cast iron are enhanced as well. Interestingly, the corrosion mechanism of the nitriding stainless steel changs from pitting failure to uniform corrosion, which extends its service life in marine environment. Several practical applications will be listed.
